Itinerary

The below itinerary provides one projection of the daily schedule. Changes may be made to improve the program quality, based on the logistical and educational needs of enrolled students.

DAYS 1/2: ARRIVAL TRAVEL/ATHENS

We depart on an overnight flight to Athens. Upon arrival, we settle in and begin mapping out the program itinerary and the challenges that each student will be facing in their work in the field. Also, students create a “full value contract,” where the expectations and roles of each member of the group are aligned. Staff members provide feedback and guidance. Individual students then lay out their learning goals for the trip, and all members make commitments to support each other’s development.

We begin our exploration of the city at the Acropolis and the Parthenon. To end our first day in Greece, we enjoy a delicious and hearty dinner with a view of the sacred temple of Athena.

DAY 3: HISTORY AND MEMORY A TAPESTRY OF PERSPECTIVES

  • Breakfast Market
  • Guided Tour of Biblical History Sites
  • Lunch
  • Market Exploration
  • First Impressions Workshop
  • Dinner

We continue to familiarize ourselves with the city through visits to ancient Biblical history sites, including the Agora, the Propylaea, the temple of the Wingless Victory, the Erechtheum, Porch of Maidens, and Mars Hill where Paul was brought before the council. These“layers” of history provide fertile ground for discussion about the cultural heritage, religious legacy, and modern significance of these ancient places.

In the afternoon, we have the opportunity to explore a local market and immerse ourselves amidst the new and inviting Greek flavors of the region

DAY 4: SACRED SITES CORNITH AND MYCANAE

In the afternoon, we move on to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mycenae, feeling the echoes of mythology in the mysteries of the ruins. We return to Athens in the evening for a group conversation about Christianized sites, grounding ourselves again in the historical moment that Greece moved from a polytheistic to a monotheistic culture, and what happened to key religious sites in the process.

  • Transfer to Meteora
  • Small group exploration of monasteries

We take in the natural wonder of the rock formations and aim to comprehend how geography has shaped the events that have contributed to Meteora's singularity.
